In 2007, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) classified 177,109 organisations as not-for-profits. Of those, the Productivity Commission report of 2010 regarded 59,000 as economically significant. The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission is the national regulator of charities, that help charities understand and meet their obligations through information, advice and guidance. They make up a diverse sector working across Australia and internationally in a broad range of areas, including health, education, social welfare, religion, culture, human rights, the environment and animal welfare.
